 | 1st Nov 2009 | More photos of the High Dyke Branch and Iron Ore lines (120 images)
These images were taken by my late father during the latter days of BR and the abortive preservation attempt which followed.
I would be pleased to hear from anyone who has more details, especially of the quarries at Colsterworth to improve the captions.

 | 26th Aug 2009 | Swayfield 1970 to 1983 (60 images)
Swayfield is on the ECML, near Corby Glen, south of Stoke Summit.
The photos were taken between January 1970 and February 1983.
They show the changes in motive power, stock and the surroundings over the period.
It was a pleasant place, an overbridge with parking space, low parapets, and only a short distance from my parents when I visited.

|
 | | The High Dyke branch and ore lines after BR - a Preservation attempt (43 images)
Preserved engines were kept at Market Overton and Sewstern, it was hoped to preserve either the High Dyke branch or the ex Midland Railway route to Saxby junction. Sadly the attempt foundered. This is a record of the time, presented in a logical sequence starting at High Dyke.
Amongst the engines present were Flying Scotsman, Pendennis Castle and Ellerman Lines (now exhibited in the NRM York).
|
 | | The High Dyke Branch in latter BR days (48 images)
The line ran from High Dyke, just north of Stoke Tunnel, on the ECML to serve the Iron Ore quarries in the areas of Colsterworth, Sproxton, Buckminster and Sewstern. It was opened by the GNR in 1916 and closed in 1973, at the time the quarries closed when it was decided to import iron ore.
By the time these photos were taken some of the local roads had been moved to allow quarry extensions, so the crossing names do not always fit the BR Sectional Appendix.
